Maccabi Canada rounds out hockey coaching staff

The coaching staff for Maccabi Canada’s men’s hockey team is set.

Greg Gilbert and Mike Pelino have been named assistants to head coach Mike Keenan.

Gilbert won Stanley Cups as a player with the New York Islanders and New York Rangers. He has coached in the NHL with the Calgary Flames, and was recently named OHL Coach of the Year for his work with the Saginaw Spirit.

Pelino has coached in the NHL with Florida and New York, and is the current head coach of the Peterborough Petes in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Pelino has also coached Team Canada at the World Junior Championships and the World Championships, and was an assistant with the gold-medal-winning team at the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics.

“There are NHL teams that would be envious of a coaching staff like this,” said Team Canada hockey chair Mark Goodman. “I can’t say enough about the staff that Mike Keenan and GM Alex Voihanski have put together.”

The Maccabi Games, also known as the Jewish Olympics, take place every four years in Israel, and feature more than 9,000 athletes. Hockey competition will take place in July 2013 in the northern city of Metulla.

Tryouts for the hockey team will be held in Montreal on May 25 and 26 at Bonaventure Arena and in Toronto on June 8 to 10 at Pavilion Arena.
