MUSICAL FUNDRAISER

The Segal Centre presents its fifth Community Musical Fundraiser with a tribute to The Beatles, called “Come Together,” 1:30-3 p.m. The event is aimed at providing “accessibility to the arts” and gives volunteer performers an opportunity to strut their stuff on the Segal stage with a “rocking tribute to the Fab Four.” The event will combine song, dance, and video. MADA PASSOVER

Some 5,000 free Passover meals for an expected 2,500 people will be served at 10 locations around the island for the two seders at 7:30 p.m. organized by the MADA kosher soup kitchen and conducted at each by a rabbi and chazzan. The seders are open to any Jew who would not otherwise be able to attend a seder. The locations are: MADA headquarters, 6700 Cote des Neiges;  Gelber Conference Centre, 5151 Cote Ste. GENOCIDAL TRAUMA

The Jewish Public Library (JPL), Cummings Jewish Centre for Seniors, and the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre are partnered for the community book launch of Recovery from Genocidal Trauma by Myra Giberovitch, a daughter of Holocaust survivors and social worker who has spent her life working on survivor and survivor family issues, 7 p.m. at the JPL. Her book is described as, “an essential tool for anyone who studies, interacts, lives, or works with survivors of mass atrocity,” and as a “comprehensive guide to understanding Holocaust survivors and responding to their needs.” For details, call 514-342-1234.

NEW JCF SCHOLARSHIP

The Jewish Community Foundation of Montreal recently announced the launch of a new scholarship called the Stephen Bronfman Scholarship Fund in Environmental Studies, launched by Stephen Bronfman and his wife Claudine. The scholarship will be awarded to university students who share concerns for the environment, with two one-time scholarships awarded each year: $2,500 for first-year undergraduate students to reduce tuition fees and $7,500 as a second-year graduate scholarship to help enrich research. WEIZMANN SHOWDOWN

Last month at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, one Montreal and one Toronto team competed in a two-day international physics tournament involving some 40 international teams. Montreal’s St. George’s School finished in eighth place while Yeshivat Or Chaim Team 2 finished fourth. To get to Israel, the two Canadian schools had earlier won Weizmann Canada’s 18th annual Shalheveth Freier Physics Tournament qualifying rounds, and the trip’s expenses to and in Israel were covered by Weizmann Canada donors.

HEBREW FOUNDATION HELP

Some Grade 4 girls from Hebrew Foundation School, inspired by teacher Stuart Cohen’s English class, recently took it upon themselves to initiate and run their own fundraiser for the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation. They decided to sell their handmade crafts such as “rainbow loom” bracelets and duct tape wallets to their classmates, while student services director Tina Roth helped them make business cards and order forms. The result? They ended up raising more than $600, which was picked up personally by the hospital foundation’s Josie Pizzuco.

 

APRIL FOOL’S DAY PRANK

As an April Fool’s Day prank, the Jewish General Hospital issued an April 1 “press release” describing an “innovative plan” to house a “Medicasino” inside Pavilion K, site for its new ER. The “fast-track” construction promised to reap $50 million, “with annual jackpots of $150 million thereafter.” Quoted were spokesperson “Sylvie de Ceiver” (deceiver, get it?), “Benjamin Aprille,” director of a program informally known as “Aprille FOOL,” and nurse “Tiffany Bluffer.”

The non-sectarian Chabad Lifeline for anyone affected by addictions, offers a Group Dynamics for Families workshop for family members who need support in dealing with the chaos that comes with addiction, on Tuesdays, 1:30-3 p.m… also offered is a Women’s 12-step co-dependency workshop on Wednesdays 1-2:30 p.m. For details or to register, call Karen Bresinger at 514-738-7700. TENNIS PLAYER PREVAILS

Provincially ranked junior tennis player Sarah Levy, 14, of Cote St. Luc recently prevailed in St. Eustache at an age group tournament. In the round for girls 14-16, Levy defeated Camilia Tobar 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals, and then went on to beat Julia Tcherkas 8-2, 6-1 to win the title. n
