NEW MDA AMBULANCE

Canadian Magen David Adom for Israel national president Joseph Bitton and Montreal ambulance chair Norton Segal will be on hand 9 a.m. in front of the YM-YWHA Ben Weider JCC to unveil the 11th ambulance bought by the Y Wolf Pack running group. Pack leader and chief fundraiser Wolf Bronet (who turns 90 next March), and other group stalwarts will be there. The public is welcome to attend.

Veteran film director and writer Donald Winkler is on the shortlist for a Quebec Writers Federation literary award whose six winners will be announced at its 15th anniversary gala starting 6:30 p.m. at the Corona Theatre, 2490 Note Dame St. W. Winkler is now a literary translator and one of three nominees for the QWF’s Cole Foundation Prize for his translation into English of Pierre Nepveu’s Les Verbes majeurs (The Major Verbs, Vehicule Press). JPL ARCHIVES @ MUSEUM

The Jewish Public Library said it’s honoured to have archival material on display at a special new exhibit called Lives and Times of the Plateau running until Sept. 1 at the Pointe-à-Calière museum. The artifacts include poems and personal possessions of famed Yiddish poet J.I. Segal and pamphlets of Communist politician Fred Rose. Visit www.pacmusee.ca.

HOSPITAL SCULPTURE

Susan Stromberg created Lachine Hospital’s centennial sculpture unveiled Oct. 18 at a ceremony that saw the participation of municipal dignitaries and hospital leaders. A native of Saskatchewan, Stromberg has been a Montrealer for 50 years. Her sculpture stands seven-feet tall, is cast in aluminum, and symbolizes the hospital’s merger with the Montreal University Health Centre.

CJCS GOES SOUTH

For the second year, snowbirds have Cummings Jewish Centre for Seniors programming in Florida and continue to have off-main-site programs in Laval, the West Island, and Westmount, with double the number of courses compared to years ago. 514-342-1234.

 

ART AUCTION SUCCESS

Canadian Hadassah-WIZO raised more than $160,000 for children, health care, and women in Canada and Israel at its October  dinatoire and art auction, drawing 250 to the Espace Reunion and honouring Just for Laughs’ founder Andy Nulman.

 

SENIORS-IN-NEED MONEY

More than $20,000 was raised for the Cummings Jewish Centre for Seniors Foundation at a photo art exhibit organized by the Liane and Danny Taran Foundation and held at Town of Mount Royal’s Charities Gallery.
