The Anne and Max Tanenbaum Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto’s Kimel Family Education Centre in Vaughan celebrated students of another era at its inaugural Grandparents’ Day last week.

“There will be no tests, no assignments being graded, and we have asked teachers to refrain from giving out detentions to any of our grandparents – so you are safe today,” TanenbaumCHAT president Les Fluxgold joked with the 190 visiting “students” Oct. 9.

The seniors were welcomed by the campus choir, which sang an arrangement of melodies as the visitors made their way through a morning assembly and breakfast.

Erica Lipworth, president of the campus student council, greeted the guests.

“Grandparents are our [students’] biggest fans.  They are our walking resumes, telling anyone who will listen how accomplished, beautiful, smart, considerate, capable and unique we really are,” she said, adding that “you are the ones who worry whether we have a Jewish education worthy of the sacrifices you and the generations before you have made.”

The seniors watched a video that showcased the wide range of subjects offered and learned of the more than 70 clubs and committees at the school. They were then escorted to their grandchildrens’ classes for an interactive hour of learning.

The grandparents later stopped by a photo booth with their grandchildren en route to their final destination of the day, a luncheon at the Schwartz/Reisman Centre.

TanenbaumCHAT’s Wallenberg campus on Wilmington Avenue will be celebrating its second annual Grandparents’ Day on Oct. 23, when many of the grandparents will head back to school to do it all over again with another grandchild.
