MAYORAL CANDIDATES

BEST OF HEBREW U

Hebrew University history professor Alexander Yakobson and professor of medicine Rotem Karni are guest speakers at “The Best of Hebrew U” held at the YM-YWHA at 7 p.m., with the Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. SACRED MUSIC

GERMAN FILM

The award-winning German film Kaddish for a Friend is presented with English subtitles at the Jewish Public Library at 7:30 p.m., in association with the German consulate and Goethe Institut. A troubled 14-year-old boy, a Palestinian raised in a refugee camp, now living in Berlin, forms an unlikely relationship with the elderly Russian Jewish war veteran neighbour he tried to rob.

Goethe director Manfred Stoffl shares his insights on the Berlin neighbourhood of Kreuzberg, similar to the fictional district in the movie. Tickets, 514-345-6416.

The first event of the season of the Segal Centre’s Young Leaders takes place from 6-8 p.m. Guest speakers Robert Gervais, president and CEO of Zerofail; director, actor and teacher Amanda Kellock, and Allan Sandler, producer of Copa de Oro Productions, speak on “Story Selling.” This series is aimed at encouraging young business people and professionals to take an interest in the arts and their support. Johanne Boileau, director of nursing, has been named interim executive director of the Jewish General Hospital (JGH) following the departure of Hartley Stern on Sept. 27 after serving five years. The hospital says it’s in the final stages of choosing the next executive director. In his farewell address at the 79th annual general meeting, Stern emphasized the need for the JGH to strengthen ties with other health care institutions …Galith Levy is the new Quebec Region executive director of the Jewish National Fund (JNF). She previously worked at Federation CJA as director of the Sepharade Campaign, Young Adult Division and, most recently, of operations for the campaign. “Ms. Levy’s specialization in marketing, strategic development and fundraising, coupled with her strong work ethic and dedication to the Montreal community, will prove to be assets to JNF,” said the organization’s Toronto-based CEO, Josh Cooper…

The Segal Centre’s Sherlock Holmes is nominated for seven METAs, the new Montreal English Theatre Awards, including Outstanding Production and Outstanding New Adaptation by Greg Kramer, who passed away before the play opened.
