Editor – The Canadian Jewish News  – Job Summary

The Editor leads the content and journalistic performance of the CJN and is responsible for all content development, presentation and quality.

The Editor leads a diverse and talented team of journalists, freelance writers, columnists, guest authors, copy editors and proofreaders in all aspects of news-gathering, opinion presentation, graphic design and advertising display in print and on digital platforms.

The Editor is the ambassador of the newspaper in the community and is expected to speak on behalf of The Canadian Jewish News, and meet as appropriate with community agencies, organizations, synagogues, schools and individuals. 

Acting as the voice of The Canadian Jewish News, the Editor is responsible for a weekly, insightful editorial statement and for ensuring an unfailingly high quality of readership content.

The Editor ensures that stories and columns are compelling, relevant, accurate, fair and well written.

Profile

The Editor must possess an ethical profile of the highest integrity, passion about community journalism at its finest and a willingness to be actively involved in the Jewish community.

The Editor must have strong organizational and interpersonal skills and a proven track record of setting priorities and managing a newsroom to meet deadlines. 

The Editor must possess strong writing and editing skills, a solid knowledge of the software currently used within a modern newsroom operation, and be adept with social media.

The Editor must work collaboratively with all departments of the Canadian Jewish News and demonstrate a commitment to ensure that The Canadian Jewish News meets its editorial and financial  goals.

The Editor must have the ability to collaborate with an editorial board and community members with diverse opinions.  The Editor will encourage constructive opinion sharing and reader involvement and measures the impact of policies and events with a view to generating a positive impact in the community.

It is critical that the Editor be knowledgeable in the history, current character and composition of the Canadian Jewish community and be familiar with its institutional workings, have an awareness and understanding of issues of concern to the community, and be capable of interacting with all its religious and socio-political affiliations and streams.

Qualifications

Strong leadership, management, team-building, and decision-making skills

Strong reporting, writing, editing, and social media skills

Commitment to growing readership and revenue on multiple platforms (print and digital)

Creative with ideas to enhance news coverage

Sound judgement in determining priorities

Superior communication skills (English, French, Hebrew)

Newsroom leadership experience as a top editor or managing editor preferred

A BA in journalism or a related discipline

Business management skills and experience an asset
