JGH WINDFALLS

The Jewish General Hospital recently received a couple of major donations. The Oberfeld family raised more than $525,000, including its lead gift of $100,000, for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia research. Beneficiaries include the new Mary Katz Claman Alzheimer Risk Assessment Clinic, headed by neurologist Hyman Schipper. Bell Canada donated $230,000 over three years to the JGH’s child psychiatry transitional care program, which is designed to integrate former patients back into their schools and communities, and prevent re-admission.

The JGH will also benefit from the $30-million donation by the Rossy Family Foundation for cancer care, along with the McGill University Health Centre and St. Mary’s Hospital. A total of $58 million is committed to the project over the next 10 years.

FIGHTING CANCER

The Cancer Fight Club’s Knockout! gala, featuring former boxers Otis Grant and David Loiseau, raised $150,000 for the Jewish General Hospital Hope and Cope’s psychosocial support services for young adults with cancer. More than 400 people turned out at Espace Réunion to cheer on 19 amateur boxers, who raised $2,000 each to participate. Event chair was Marla Fox.

Cancer Fight Club is an online community (www.cancerfightclub.com) providing information and connection for young people with this disease.

KIPPOT EXHIBIT

Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom’s Aron Museum is exhibiting kippot created by the Pomegranate Guild of Judaic Textiles of Toronto, inspired by biblical figures, until mid-August.

A native of Vienna, Absil found refuge in Belgium during World War II… Frank Guttman’s 2007 biography of progressive Quebec politician Télesphore-Damien Bouchard (1881-1962) has been published in French by Les Editions Hurtubise as Le Diable de Saint-Hyacinthe, with a preface by former premier Jean Charest. Guttman, a retired physician (he was chief of surgery at the Montreal Children’s Hospital), is enjoying a second career studying and writing about Quebec history.
