Acclaimed director Mike Nichols, who won an Oscar for The Graduate, has died.

Nichols died Wednesday evening at the age of 83, ABC News President James Goldston announced.

Nichols was the husband of broadcast journalist Diane Sawyer, the former anchor of ABC World News.

Nichols, a director, writer, and producer, was one of the few in the business to win an Emmy, Grammy, Tony, and Oscar award.

Among his most well-known works were Working Girl, Silkwood, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Closer, Charlie Wilson’s War, Annie, Spamalot,  The Birdcage, and Angels in America.

Goldston, in a statement, called Nichols “a true visionary.”  He added: “No one was more passionate about his craft than Mike.”

Nichols, born Michael Igor Peschkowsy, left with his family for the United States from Nazi Germany in 1938.
