WALK-IN CENTRE HELP
The Jewish General Hospital’s two-year-old Herzl CRIU Walk-In Centre has successfully been easing pressure on the hospital’s emergency department through a program that uses emergency department referrals to the walk-in centre in specific cases, such as acute cases that might need monitoring but not through emergency. The program, called Transformational Change, is intended for those with chronic illnesses and also uses a system of triage to assess whether need would be better served though the emergency department or can be referred to the centre. “A principal goal of the [centre] is to treat severely ill patients referred from [emergency], for primary care follow-up,” said Herzl centre director Dr. Michael Malus. From March 2011 to March 2012, 565 patients were referred to the walk-in centre, with a lower number of return visits to the emergency department. “This low number of return visits to [emergency] is a testimony to the importance and the strength of this primary care follow-up initiative by the Herzl CRIU,” emergency chief Dr. Marc Afilalo said.
