MAHALIA MUSICAL

The Mahalia Jackson Musical, dedicated to the legendary “Queen of Gospel” and civil rights activist, begins its run through March 24 with 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. shows at the Segal Centre. The musical, the perfect vehicle for star Ranee Lee, is written and directed by Roger Pierce and presented by the centre and Copa de Oro Productions. Earlier at the 11 a.m. Sunday@the-Segal event, MP Tyrone Benskin, former artistic director of the Black Theatre Workshop, discusses the arts’ role in the civil rights movement. CINÉMA RENDEZ-VOUS

The eighth edition of the Communauté sépharade unifiée du Québec’s Les Rendez-vous du Cinéma Israélien de Montréal, a film festival featuring the best of Israeli cinema and documentaries in their original languages with French subtitles, runs through March 13 with 28 screenings at the Cinéma du Parc and Segal Centre CinemaSpace. Montreal B’nai Brith Food Baskets Inc. packs its annual baskets today, 5-8 p.m. The project packs, distributes and delivers more than 4,000 food baskets each year and helps organizations such as the Generations Foundation, Sun Youth and MADA. Packing and deliveries take place March 7-20 (5-8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Sundays). $21 MILLION FOR CANCER

Quebec is giving $10 million over four years and the private sector $11.1 million for a project called Personalized Medicine Partnership for Cancer (PMPC). Its goal is to develop an integrated individual patient-based approach to cancer treatment to improve outcomes. The project’s “clinical driver” is the Quebec Clinical Research Organization of Canada, co-founded by the Jewish General Hospital’s Segal Cancer Centre and co-directed by Segal Centre director and oncologist Gerald Batist. Montreal biotech firm Caprion Proteome is leading the project in partnership with Onozyme Pharma, Pfizer Canada, Sanofio Canada and Telus Health GP.
