Yidstock at Yiddish Book Center

We have just returned from visiting the National Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, Mass., where I sent my late father’s books. The centre rescues Yiddish and other modern Jewish books.

We chose this particular time to visit because the event Yidstock: The Festival of New Yiddish Music was at the centre from July 11 to 15. Yidstock featured films and live performances by such greats in our Jewish music world as Hankus Netsky and the Klezmatics. The performance hall is large enough, but small enough to be intimate. The concerts were amazing, inspiring people to get up and dance in the aisles. Everyone was so happy to be in on this first of what they hope to be an annual event.

The festival took place on the beautiful campus of Hampshire College, which also boasts several museums. The neighbouring towns are worth exploring, too.

It was thrilling to see how the centre has flourished and to meet Aaron Lansky, who founded it. The staff and volunteers were more than friendly and helpful hosts.

I could go on and on. Do yourself a favour – put it on your “to-do list”!
