Listeria warning for kosher butcher’s products

Tags: Food Health

MONTREAL — Quebec and Montreal food inspectors have warned against consuming certain cold cuts from a kosher butcher shop in Côte St. Luc because they may be contaminated with listeria.

The shop is Boucherie et charcuterie Amsellem at 5450 Westminster Ave. It is certified with the MK hechsher of the Vaad Ha’ir.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, in collaboration with the city’s food inspection division, issued the alert Oct. 12.

The products affected were sold Oct. 3 and bear the labels Charcuterie Laost and Charcuterie Milano, which were sliced by staff according to the customers requirement, as well as smoked sausage and the prepared veal product called supreme de veau.

The business has voluntarily recalled the products, and they can be returned to the shop.

To date, there have been no reported cases of illness associated with consuming these meats. Pregnant women, children, the elderly and those with suppressed immune system may suffer the most serious consequences from ingesting listeria.

The provincial food inspectors can be reached at 1-800-463-5023.
